Abstract

Six to eight-month-old seedlings of merawan siput jantan (Hopea odorata) and jelutong (Dyera costulata) were planted on degraded sites viz decking sites, road shoulders and skid trails of logged over forest in Pasoh Forest Reserve, Negeri Sembilan. At two years after planting, an average survival percentage of 85 % was recorded for jelutong and 92 % for merawan siput jantan. Current annual increment of height (hCAI) for 2-y-old merawan siput jantan and jelutong stands ranged from 0.95 to 1.3 m y₋¹ for the former and 1.09 to 1. 82 m y¹ for the latter. Diameter growth at 30 cm above ground level of stand age 2. 4 y for merawan siput jantan ranged from 3. 9 to 5. 0 cm and from 4. 4 to 4. 8 cm for jelutong. Jelutong planted on the skid trails and road shoulders, and merawan siput jantan planted on decking site had the highest hCAI. The good growth performance of these two species suggest the potential of such species for degraded sites of logged over forests and forest plantations.
