Abstract
This paper examines the importance of commercial rattan collecting for Orang Asli communities compared with other sources of income; the effects of the recent increased overseas demand for rattan on stocks of wild-collected rattan, in particular for rotan manau, and how this affects the economy of the Orang Asli communities; the effects of logging and diminishing forested area on the supply of rattan; and discusses future trends that would enable rattan collecting to maintain its vital economic role in Orang Asli communities.
