Abstract

The Forestry and wood based industry in Malaysia is characterised by the production of large volumes of residues without any economic use. During the past few years, these residues were left in the field to be wastefully burnt away. However, in recent years, burning of wood residues in the open has been discouraged because of environmental impact. The presence of these residues in large quantity pose a disposal problem for the industry. This paper assesses the amount of wood residues available in the country and highlights some of the economic avenues of using them for the generation of energy.
