Abstract

Setiu Lagoon is one of the most beautiful and rare coastal landscape found in Malaysia. It forms an important element of the Northern Terengganu coastal plain. The lagoon was formed as a result of shoreline progradation which has left a water body trapped behind a barrier system. The lagoon bears very important heritage, scientific as well as socio-economic values which have not been well studied until now. The sediments around the lagoon which comprise loose sand with minor muddy material are very porous in nature and this makes the lagoon very susceptible to environmental hazards. At present, the lagoon is undergoing various threats from natural events and human activities in and around it. If the present rate of development is allowed to proceed without proper monitoring sooner or later we may loose this very valuable natural heritage.
