Kalyana Sundram, . (2005) Meeting the rising health awareness: the palm oil formula. [Proceedings Paper]
Abstract
Increasing health awareness among consumers today dictates that any food must be able to portray a healthy image if it is to be competitive in the market place. From a health and nutrition point of view however oils and fats unfortunately suffer from a persistent low score and are often associated with food choices that should be avoided or consumed in moderation. Despite this generalization, several examples exist, whereby the adverse image of oils and fats and their perceived association with increased risk for degenerative diseases have been successfully overcome. A number of opportunities exist to enhance the image of palm oil as wholesome and nutritious edible oil. Examples of instances wherein segments of the industry have created opportunities based on the fatty acid composition of palm oil as well as the health benefits of palm minor components are highlighted. In an emerging trans-free dietary world, the significant opportunities for palm oil as natural solid fat are also discussed.
