Competitive environment for lauric oils

Abstract

Laurie oils (CNO and PKO) are the most important raw materials for the manufacture of oleochemicals. They are the only important crop with CB, CI0, CI 2 and Cl 4 chain lengths, which are very important for the manufacture of oleochemical products for detergents, soap, personal care products, lubricants, food additives, etc. In several fatty acid markets, there are no alternatives for !auric oils. In the fatty alcohol market, !auric oils are competing with synthetic alcohols made from petroleum or from coal. Natural alcohols are constantly increasing its market share at the expense of synthetic alcohols. The production capacity for oleochemicals based on lauric oils is constantly increasing in Malaysia, Indonesia and China. Since the production of CNO is stagnating or decreasing, the future growth of oleochemicals based on lauric oils will depend exclusively from the development of PKO.
