Abstract

Hyperaccumulation of toxic metals by plants with specific accumulation capacities is fast finding applications in many parts of the world. In the South Pacific the technology is still to be applied. This study investigated the possibility of using the known hyperaccumulator Brassica juncea for the uptake of the heavy metals: Ni Cd Pb and Zu under tropical conditions which pertain in much of the South Pacific. The results showed significant uptake the enrichment in the plants that were cultivated in soil spiked with these metals. However there were interesting trends such as selective uptake of metals as well as implications of plant age on the uptake of metals. These findings will be discussed together with their implications on the population which relies on the plant for food in the South Pacific.
