Abstract

Information collected from pre-felling inventory could assist in supporting better management decision to ensure forest sustainable yield and harvesting. Available stock map and information can be evaluated to quantitavely describe existing forest stand and trees conditions. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the capabilty of the GIS in forest inventory work especially in mapping inventory plot distribution and individual tree locations from pre-felling inventory results together study site. ArcGIS software was used to create digital map layers such as plot layout contours individual tree locations and others. In tandem information on each feature pertinent to each layer or map was also keyed in to populate the database. Stand stocking and individual tree location were able to be displayed in the computer by the GIS. A major advantage of digital plotting is that it is possible to re-use and re-plot the maps at any scale in addition to the ability of selecting and viewing any particular inventory plot in a timely manner and at minimal cost. This study showed that development of a simple database for pre-f inventory results is viable and practical for even small areas. It would also serve as an example for the benefecial use of GIS and computer mapping as a spatial tool in managing small scale survey in inventory work in this country.
