Abstract
Rainfall distribution in inland areas of Peninsular Malaysia is generally uneven thus bearing considerable effect on the growth and production of oil palms. A lysimeter study conducted at Feldas Tun Razak Agriculture Services Centre at Jerantut Pahang over a period of 28 years revealed a strong influence of water on oil palm yield. On the same subject Felda Agriculture Services Sdn Bhd laid out three irrigation field trails with different rainfall regimes and palm age. The cost-benefit and viability of irrigation based on-date data from these trails is given. Since large-scale irrigation is rarely easy to implement due to high water requirements difficult terrain and logistics various other approaches to manage water use by conserving moisture in the field have been practised by the industry as discussed in this paper.
