Abstract

Comparative assessments were performed on the fish population data obtained from Kedah waters before and after the tsunami of 26 December 2004. The reef fish population from Pulau Payar Marine Park and the coastal fish population near Kuala Kedah were investigated. From variance analyses ANOVA it was found that the tsunami significantly affected the coastal fish population but not the reef fish population. In general the biodiversity in terms of the number of species and the mean trophic level of the coastal fish population increased significantly but overall density and abundance remained unchanged.
