Abstract

The impact study was conducted from January-June 2005. Three tsunami affected areas were selected for this study. They were Kampung Kuala Teriang in Langkawi Sungai Merbok estuary in Kedah and the Sungai Udang cage culture area in Penang. All the three areas had fishery-related activities. The main aim of this study was to assess if there were any changes in the abiotic factors such as physico-chemical parameters and nutrient levels of water which might reduce the effectiveness of these areas for fisheries activities. The results indicated that there was low or minimal damage to the mangrove landscape in affected areas. All the three tsunami affected areas experienced an elavation in ammonia-nitrogen level greater than 0.02ppm.This exceeded the threshold level of criteria suitable for aquatic life.
