Abstract
This paper provides the results of the assemblages structure analysis of demersal fish resources in the coastal waters off Kedah and Penang Malaysia. Multivariate techniques classification and ordination analysis were used to analyzed scientific trawl survey data to evaluate demersal fish assemblage structure and determine the possible effects of the 26 December 2004 tsunami on the fisheris resources. Results indicate that spatial patterns of demersal fish assemblages were influenced by depth with two assemblages groups i.e. shallow and deep delineated at about 35m in Penang waters and about 20-30m off Kedah. Depth significantly influenced the assemblage groups in Penang but not Kedah. However the assemblages delineations were consistent between the pre- and post- tsunami surveys in both areas. In terms of species compositions differences in the major species were observed between shallow and deep assemblage groups but the dominant species in the same assemblage group during the pre and post tsunami showed similar patterns. Moreover the relative density of species/taxa associated with the shallow assemblage was higher than that associated with the shallow assemblage group in Penang waters. For Kedah the deep assemblage showed a relatively higher density than the shallow assemblage group.
