Abstract

A study on the socio-economic impacts of the tsunami on the traditional fishers was successfully carried out from 4-12 July 2005. It covered 10 fishing villages in southwest Penang Island. One hundred and ninety respondents from the socio-economic study conducted in year 2000 were interviewed. Questionnaires were specially developed to acquire information on the basic fishery background resources during the pre-and post-tsunami periods the impact on their livelihood and financial aid disbursement to the affected fishers. The objective of the study is to access immediate and long-term socio-economic impacts of the fishers by the tragic event thus addressing the issue of inventorying locations quantities and qualities of marine resources. Drawing from official statistics and interview this study attempted to access the extent of damage on the traditional fishers.
