Abstract
Software to carry out the processes of automatic feature extraction for mapping and determining elevations from overlapping SPOT digital data must be efficient fast and be able to adapt to different types of terrain features ground cover and terrain conditions. The paper will consider the approaches adopted for the extraction of features on satellite images based on image processing and the active contouring method and the steps involved in the automatic computation of elevations from digital satellite data. Some examples of software developed for mapping from satellite images will be given anf the accuracies of data derived.
