Abstract

Neighborhood analysis is one of the fundamental spatial functions available in GIS. Neighborhood information is very useful for various applications such as searching spatial autocorrelation analysis landuse modeling asessment or modeling of wildlife habitat and disease spread modeling. Virtually all GIS softwares available today provide some form of neighborhood operations in varying degrees of flexibility and sophiscation. Since many neighborhood operations are more easily implemented using some regular division of study area they are commonly available on raster GIS. However very few if any vector-based GIS provide similar capabilities. This paper reports the preliminary results of our research on the development of application programs for various neighborhood operations in vector-based GIS.
