Abstract

This study is an extension of the PORIM-PORLA joint study 1995 on factors that have contributed to the low oil extraction rate OER particularly in Peninsular Malaysia. The major controllable factors continue to be the problem. They are poor quality of fresh fruit bunches FFB uncollected loose fruits and high trash content and they are all created in the field. Most mills have installed system for recovery of oil from sterilizer condensate. A high percentage of unstripped bunches is however a contributing factor in mills with poor process control. Mills should therefore try to minimize oil losses as much as possible by optimizing the process conditions and through good maintenance practices. Mills processing good quality FFB with low trash contamination and good milling efficiency have maintained high OER consistently.
