Abstract

Durian Durio zibenthinus Murr. is a socio-economically important fruit tree in Malaysia. It is ranked as our second most important fresh fruit export next to watermelon. Durians are mainly exported to our traditional markets namely Singapore and Hong Kong. One problem faced by the local durian industry is shortage of good commercial varieties. Presently popular clones are a result of clonal selection using naturally available crop variability. In recent years effort at hybridization and selection are being intensified to complement clonal selection in durian. Between 1987 till 1989 interse crosses using a set of local clones enabled generation of a new F1 hybrid population for evaluation. The F1 hybrid progenies were planted in Bukit Tangga. No significant differences in the date of onset of first flowering December 2001/January 2002 were observed for all hybrids. However onset of first flowering was earlier in D24 and later in D99 two parents used as controls compared to the hybrids. Hybrid 2499-8 and hybrid 1199-1 exhibited strong paternal effects with regards to onset of first flowering as they are both late flowerers just like D99. Most hybrid show shorter fruit development period compared to the controls. However hybrid 2499-8 that flowered the latest but was shortest in terms of fruit development period. Observation made since 1995 showed no incidence of the uneven fruit ripening UFR disorder in all hybrid progenies. In the current year 2001/2002 UFR was incidentally high. UFR was highest 1 in hybrid 1199-1. Hybrid 9911-8 failed to produce fruits for UFR assessment. The current season also showed that hybrid 2498-15 was the highest yielder followed by hybrid 2499-8 and hybrid 9953-11. Highest aril recovery 23.9 was recorded in the hybrid 9911-7. Occurrence of shrivelled seeds a commercially desired fruit quality character was highest in hybrid 9953-11.
