Abstract

Agroforestry or farm forestry is a production technique or method that combines agriculture and forestry on the same piece of land to fully utilising the natural resources of sunlight water and nutrition. By following this method the farmers get income both from agricultural and forest products. This farming skill has been expanded on a large scale to promote the development of land use systems and to meet the social requirements. It has special meaning to bring a balance between limited land resources available and to grow enough food to meet the needs of increasing population. In the case of pineapple the crop has been planted within the agroforestry system in the world over either as intercropping under the rubber or oil palm plantation system or under the intercropping system with forest species such as Eucalyptus. This paper reviews the sustainability of pineapple for its adaptation as a crop in the agroforestry system. The review mainly discusses the importance of the pineapple for its adaptation as a crop in the agroforestry system. The review mainly discusses the importance of the pineapple plant within the agroforestry system which includes its role in the erosion control of the agroforest environment.
