Abstract

Binio Penyilam Conservation Area covers an area of about 20 000 hectares. It is located in Bintulu Division and management under Grand Perfect Sdn. Bhd. The area being surrounded by forest plantation thus serves as a natural habitat for many species of flora and fauna. It is also a water catchment area and provides the basic needs for the local communities living within and surrounding the diptrocarp forest kerangas forest peat swamp forest and alluvial forest. Floristic inventories were conducted in selected areas to provide baseline data on on the flora. A total of 128 species were recorded. The present inventories covered only a small portion of the Conservation Area. However based on our data and observation it is considered biologically rich. Pressure from the forest plantation surrounding the Conservation Area demand for land use from the local communities and security of species survival will require a paper management plan for Binio Penyilam Conservation Area.
