Abstract
The State Forestry Department of Johor SFDJ has recognized the need to conserve Johors rich biodiversity in its forest-system based on the departments own set of defined criteria as well as those of the National Policy on Biodiversity 1998 and the National Physical Plan 2005. The establishment of about 1 800 hectares Panti Bird Sanctuary in the Panti Forest reserve Kota Tinggi Johor which is also known as the bunker Trail to the birding fraternity both local and abroad is SFDJs commitment in translating the significant importance to classify the Permanent Reserved Forest into Forest sanctuary for Wild Life. Conservation as stipulated under Section 101f of the National Forestry Act 1984 Act 313. With close to 300 species of birds and listed as one of the top five birding spot in the world the SFDJ has worked slosely with the Johor branch of the Malaysian Nature Society to shape the bird sanctuary that concurs with birders opinions and advice. Its status as an important International Birding Area IBA has been recognized by birders worlwide hence Pantis high conservation value has necessitated this meaningful undertaking. SFDJ sees its intrinsic value as a permanent educational research and recretional area and its natural appeal is an important eco-tourism product. As Panti is noted to be well represented by the major families of birds typical of the Oriental and Sunda regions and is also home to protected and migratory avifauna species the establishment of the Panti Bird Sanctuary answers many needs of nature lovers as well as to address effort in the conservation of forest biodiversity.
