Abstract

The limestone flora in Malaysia is commonly known harbour high biodiversity and high species endemism and so often each limestone is phtigeograhically distinct from each other. In Sarawak limestones area are located mainly in southwestern and northern Sarawak and a few isolated formations in central Sarawak covering about 0.4 of total area of Sarawak. Compared to Peninsular Malaysia and sabah more limestone areas in Sarawak are gazetted either as national parks e.g. Gunung Mulu Limestone and Niah Limestone nature reserves part of Bau Limestone or conservation areas Bukit Sarang Limestonehowever the conservation status of other limestone areas still remain uncertain e.g. Padawan Limestone Baram Limestone and Tatau Limestone. In recent years some initiatives have been implemented to inventorize and document the limestone flora of Sarawak however few areas still remain botanically unexplored or not-well documented. The flora of various limestone areas of Sarawak is discussed.
