Abstract

Perlis State Park is located along the western boarder of Perlis where Peninsular Malaysia meets Thailand. The park is located on the longest continuous range of limestone hills in the country called Nakawan Range. The park is the first state park established by the state forestry department. To ensure the park is fully protected and properly managed by the Perlis State Forestry Department an amendment to the Forestry Act 1984 by adding a new class of protected forest and forest rules were introduced. The park was established in 2000 to protect preserve and conserve the biodiversity of the area and since then it has become of flagship for ecotourism destination in the state of Perlis. This paper will highlight the uniqueness of the biodiversity found in the park and management of the area through zoning. The importance of establishing transboundary joint management committee with Thaleban National Park Thailand in protecting conserving and preserving the biodiversity of Nakawan Range will also be discussed.
