Abstract
The National Policy on Biological Diversity which was formulated in 1998 aimed to provide the direction for the nation to implement strategies action plans and programmes on biological diversity for the conservation and sustainable utilisation of its resources. One of the strategies identified was enhancing institutional and public awareness through the promotion and encourage understanding of the public institutions for the effective conservation and protection of biological diversity. This strategy could be achieved through incorporation the study of biological diversity and related fields in schools curricula and instituitions of higher learning. This paper highlights the strategies action plans and programmes undertaken by the Faculty of Forestry and other relevant faculties and institutes in Universiti Putra Malaysia in human capital development towards achieving National Policy on Biological Diversity. Among these include curriculum development and design at the undergraduate and post-graduate levels strengthening and undertaking strategic research thrust areas in biological diversity conducting professional and sub-profesional short term training enhancing linkages with local and and international agencies and engaging public in activities related to conservation and management of biological diversity. These activities have contributed significantly towards enhancing human capital for the effective conservation and protection of biological diversity in Malaysia. Future challenges and institutional framework for human capital development on biological diversity are also highlighted.
