Abstract

The International Tropical Timer Organization (ITTO) is an Inter-governmental Organization established in 1986 under United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). ITTO has its headquarters in Yokohama, Japan. The Organization facilitates discussion, consultation and international co-operation on issues relating to the international trade and utilization of tropical timber and the sustainable management of its resource base. In addition to formulation of policies in relation to sustainable management of tropical forest and the publication of various guidelines, the organization are also implementing field projects of a pilot and demonstration nature in its member countries. Within Asia, the organization is implementing several projects dealing with sustainable forest management, biodiversity conservation and reduced impact logging The general conclusion is that reduced impact logging and concerns for biodiversity conservation are part of sustainable forest management. Although the initial costs are higher than for conventional logging, the long-term effects, in the form of improved productivity and reduced environmental impact, benefits both the logging companies and the society. The general acceptance of the principles of sustainable forest management and the process needed to achieve this objective are well advanced in most producer countries.
