Mashhor M., . (2007) Research on various aspects of tropical rainforest biodiversity by the University Sains Malaysia USM. [Proceedings Paper]
Abstract
Tropical Rainforests are one of the most diversified ecosystems in the world. There are three major areas of Tropical Rainforests namley the Pan Pacific which cover Tropical Asia including Southeast Asia and Tropical Africa. The other forests are the Neo tropic which also includes the Amazonian forest systems. Although these areas lie between latitudes of 30 N and 30 S however the plant and species and compositions at the three areas are relatively different. At the Universiti Sains Malaysia USM there are several research projects being conducted by Ph.D MSc and BSc students on various aspects of Tropical Rainforests. For example Rahmat Zakaria is completing his Ph.D a project on Teluk Bahang Forest Reserve Penang. Mohd Puat Dahalan is doing a comparative study on Gunung Mat Cincang and Gunung Raya in Langkawi. Two of my Ph.D. students from Cambodia are doing projects on the Cambodian forest systems which also include Mekong cooridor plants. Baharuddin Sulaiman is cataloging the Ariod species from the Malaysian forest. Asyraf Mansor is surveying the colonization of an invasive species Mimosa pigra. Although his Ph.D. is going to be conferred by Imperial College but his field supervisor is from USM. Sim Cheng Hua is finishing her Ph.D. on the use of wetland system for waste treatment where I am one of the supervisors. Professor Zulkifli Nasution who currently the Dean of Agriculture Faculty Universitas Sutmatra Utara had completed his Ph.D under my supervision on the Toba Lake catchment area. For MScstudents there are several on going projects. For example the study on the changes in Beriah Valley landscape due to human activities based on GIS. The vegetations of highland peat swamp in Sumatra. The ecological study on the forest systems based on bird distributions is conducted at several fragmented forests. For the BSc projects the students are working on the ecology of montane forests peat swamps and riverine corridor vegetations. These are few examples can be considered as a research projects. Joint projects with other agencies are being done. For example the research on forest termites with Kyoto University is a successful one. The ecology of Palangka Raya peat swamp in Kalimantan has been run for more than five years.
