Abstract

A proposal by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to increase Vietnam's protected areas network from 1.3 to 2 million ha provided a rare opportunity to expand the protected areas network in an objective way, in order to ensure that all habitats and species were adequately represented. In response to this opportunity, BirdLife International and the Forest Inventory and Planning Institute (FIPI) conducted a desktop gap analysis of the current protected areas network, using Geographical Information System software. This analysis identified those natural forest types, ecoregions, elevation zones, provinces and globally threatened species of large mammals, primates and birds that are poorly protected within the current network. Based on the results of the analysis, BirdLife and FIPI identified 25 areas that should be added to the current protected areas network in order to improve the equitability of the network and help prevent future species extinction.
