Abstract

Palmae is one of the imortant plant families in terms of their utility to humankind besides Leguminosae and Graminae. Sarawak has more than 213 species of palms including 106 species of non-rattan palms. About 56 species from 9 genera have been recorded as endemic to Sarawak. Majority of the indigenous palms in Sarawak are found in the lowland dipterocarp forest and they are mostly understorey plants. Two genera are considered as species-rich namely Pinanga 34spp. and Licuala 20 spp.. A conservation effort on palms especially the non0rattan species was initiated in the 70s at the Botanical Research Centre BRC Semenggoh. Currently about 75 of the non-rattan palms in Sarawak have been collected and planted in the garden. This paper will discuss on the status and management of palm collections in BRC and current offort to upgrade the area as part of the BRC as a Flagship Centre project. Current status of some palms species in Sarawak will also be highlighted.
