Abstract

The agriculture industry has been recognized as one of the most hazardous industries in the US and Californias agriculture is no exception. Labor-intesive practices are still common in the maintenance and harvesting of most fresh fruits and vegetables throughout the US and the world. The most commonly reported health outcomes among California farmworkers have been associated with Musculoskeletal Disorders MSDs. This paper first will summarize the health effects of labor-intensive agriculture in California and the US with emphasis on MSDs. As part of the efforts of helping growers to cope with challenges of MSDs the paper reviewes agricultural ergonomics field and laboratory research activities in California and the US with special focus on the development and implementation of various intervention approaches in a variety of agricultural crops.
