Abstract

The activity of carrying load on the back part of human body is often practised by woman laborers in Yogyakarta. This activity is usually practised when they need to carry their crops to be sold in traditional markets. This study aims at observing the effect of the basket loads on work physiology and musculoskeletal complaint. The study was conducted by observing 30 woman sellers who carried their crops on their back all the way from their homes to the market in Sleman Regency Yogyakarta. The distance taken from their homes to the market is about 0.50- km. The age of the sellers is between 25-45 years old. The research result shows that there is a certain effect of basket loads on the difference of average heart-rate P0-P1 and musculoskeletol complaint with p0.000. There are no excessive workloads for the weight of 15 20 and 25 kgs as shown by the heart-rate recovery P1 P2 P3 respectively. Meanwhile for the weight of 30kgs there is an excessive workload so that the work needs to be redesigned. The difference of average heart-rate P0-P1 among work loads of 15kgs 20kgs and 25 kgs is significantly dufferent with p0.000. The changing of loads from 35 kgs into 30kgs has greater effect with difference of 18.7 beat/min compared to the changing of loads from 15kgs into 20kgs or 20kgs into 25 kgs. The difference of average musculoskeletal complaint for workloads of 15kgs and 20kgs is not significantly difference with p0.167 p0 05. The difference of average difference for other complaints is significantly different with p0.000 p0.05. The biggest difference is found in the workloads of 25kgs and 30kgs has a great effect on physiology factor of woman crop-seller and musculoskeletal complaint. If practised repetitively the crop cannot be delivered to the market which eventually leads to farmers losses.
