Abstract

The goal of the study was to investigate musculoskeletal disorders complaints among palm oil workers in Tawau Sabah using the standardized Cornell Musculoskeletal questionnaire. In addition questions describing work history also used in the investigation of 201 palm oil plantation workers. The study population consisted of 71 males and 29 females with a mean age SD of 26.5 1.35 years and work experience of 2.5 years range of 1 to 10 years. Most of the subjects had no education 68 followed by primary school education 9 PMR 9 SPM 12 and finally STPM 2. The results shows that workers complaints of musculoskeletal disorders in several body region such as neck upper back lower back hip/buttocks. In addition the results also showed that women had experienced more MSDs symptoms than their male counterpart. This clearly showed that subjects do experienced musculoskeletal disorders while doing their job at palm oil plantations. Even though this is only a preliminary study it does provide information regarding the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders in agriculture settings and the results suggest that interventions fpr minimizing the symptoms diseases should be a key priority. The responsible agencies such as NIOSH DOSH and others should work together in tackling this issues.
