Abstract

Economic capability and prevailing conditions of low farm size have identified many self-propelled machines on Indian farms like vertical conveyor reaper 8-row transplanter and the hand tractor also known as a power tiller. Through these machines answered many of farming problems uncomfortable postures and excessive vibrations felt at the hand grip and noise levels are major shortcomings in their field operations. Engineering and ergonomic evaluations of the vertical conveyor reaper and hand tractor were done under laboratory and field conditions. Average energy spent rate for reaper was found to be 20.9 kJ min-1. The work related body discomfort was the highest during rota-pudding followed by rota-tilling and transportation in case of hand tractor. The WRBP data indicated a need for isolating vibration from engine to the handles of VCR. At all the speeds the r.m.s. value of vobration increased with the increase of engine speed from 2500 rpm to 3250 rpm. The average muscle load during harvesting with reaper and rota-puddling with hand tractor showed similar trend. Higher values of WSI were observed during rota-tilling and rota-puddling with hand tractor.
