Abstract

Pain and discomfort are the feedback from body to alert disease damage or body limitations. In order to study the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders from illiterate female agricultural labourers a comprehensive questionnaire was developed based on the Standardized Nordic Questionnaire for the analysis of musculoskeletal symptoms of Kuornika et.al. 1987 and also the technique of Corlett and Bishops 1976 body diagram approach was adopted to analyse the discomfort. Further improvement was made by means of weightage to the rating of pain by adopting 5 point scale. A sample of 140 female agricultural labourers was randomly selected from 20 clusters of large landholdings. The age groupwise percentage distribution of both younger and middle aged women rated their discomfort level as intolerable pain in body parts like neck and shoulder upper back lower back elbows wrists hands thighs knees legs ankles and feet. The comparison between the pains experienced by the workers before and after the field work were highly significant P0.01 in most of the body parts among the younger and middle age women. The older age women were also working with all discomfort and pain. The reason may be due to heavy workload carrying of loads use of improperly designed tools use of awkward postures involved in performing the activities.
