Abstract

Industrial development is becoming more competitive especially in the ASEAN region with the forthcoming of AFTA. In order to be competitive the Malaysian industry must improve productivity is in the use of energy. Ineffecient use of energy will not only reduce productivity without deteriorating the environment. Our recent survey showed that most of the large industries derive large percentage of their energy from fossil fuels. Fossil fuels combustion is always incomplete which causes inefficient generation of energy and produces by-products that affect the environment. Another aspect of utilizing fossil fuels will be aimed at harnessing the energy at optimum level without deteriorating the environment. The characteristics of effective management of the fossil fuel will be discussed and a case study from our survey sponsored by the Ministry of Energy Telecommunications and Posts Malaysia will be presented.
