Abstract
Fingerling grass carps Ctenopharyngodon idella Cuc. and Val were grown in fiberglass tanks for 12 weeks and fed with pellets mixed with aquatic weeds for 12 weeks in order to test the feasibility of growing fingerlings using aquatic weeds as feed materials. Four weed species Hydrilla verticillata Ottelia alismoides Ipomoea aquatica and Limnocharis flava were used in the feed formulations. Fish fed on fish-meal pellets control diet exhibitied the best growth P0.05 followed by I. aquatica O. alismoides H. verticillata and L. flava respectively. The daily growth rate exhibited by fish fe with control diet and I. aquatica is 0.093 and 0.087 g day respectively whereas those fed with fresh H. veritcillata is the slowest 0.052 g day. The feed conversion ratios FCR obtained are 8.20 8.85 9.64 14.03 and 68.97 for I. aquatica O. alismoides H. verticillata respectively. Although grass carp can grow on fresh weed diet such as H. verticillata the high FCR entails that large amount of weeds be given. Thus using aquatic weeds as one of the components of fish feed seems to be the most effective way to utilizing these weeds for economic purposes.
