Abstract

An approach of using immobilized yeast cells and enzyme system of the bacteria Cellulomonas was adopted to study the feasibility of using immobilization techniques in improving cellulose hydrolysis. The yeast Saccharomyes cerevisiae was immobilized in calcium alginate gels. Comparison of cellulase actiivity was done in three systems : freely suspended Cellulomonas and freely suspended Cellulomonas with addition of alginate solution. The highest endoglucanase activity was detected in the system comprising free Cellulomonas and immobilized yeast cells. The increase was almost 100 of the acitivity detected in the mixed culture system. The enhancement of endoglucanase activity in the present of immobilized yeast cells can be attributed to the removal of cellobiose by the B-glucosidase of the yeast.
