Abstract

The establishment of Pulau Redang Marine Park has attracted the private sector to develop tourist resorts at a rapid pace. These developments have caused some negative impacts on the terrestrial and marine environments within the Marine Park. Results of the three years of monitoring indicated that massive earthworks done for the development and site preparation generated high sediment load into the nearby environment. Damage to mangroves and coral reefs was rather localised and near to the development sites. Efforts by scientists the Goverment non-Govermental organizations and at a later stages the developer have reduced terrestrial runoff sedimentation and total suspended solid level in the surrounding area. Can this trends be improved or maintained or will resource degradation continue with the expected increase in visitors and number of new resorts
