Abstract

The importance of the local forest insect collection is highlighted in this paper. Over-exploitation of the rainforests in Sabah has adversely affected the fauna and flora, including insects. Thus, a local forest insect collection, such as the collection at the Sabah Forest Research Centre in Sepilok, Sandakan is vital for ex-situ conservation of biodiversity. The collection serves as a centre of reference for insect systematics and ecology. It is also used in research and identifications of forestry pests, beneficial insects, environmental and ethnoentomological studies. The collection also helps in promoting ecotourism and environmental education.
