Abstract

A study in invertebrate organisms was carried out in a sea grass bed located off the coastline of Tanjung Pelepas in the Strait of Johore Peninsular Malaysia. The study was done at two sites one with the presence of sea grass and the other without sea grass. A total of 95 invertebrate species were recorded from the water column surface and in sediments of the sampling sites and their relative abundance recorded. Majority of the organisms were crustaceans chaetognaths echinoderms molluscs and polychaetes. The significant presence of invertebrate larvae was also observed from plankton samples taken within the seagrass area. Although no obvious trend was observed in terms of fluctuation in abundance following different tidal cycle higher numbers of larvae were collected during the high tide interval. Gastropods and polychaetes respectively formed the majority of the benthic epifauna and infauna in sea grass areas while copepods formed the most dominant component of crustaceans collected from the water column. The study summarizes the abundance and species composition of the invertebrate fauna within sea grass beds and elucidates the importance of this ecosystems to coastal fisheries and the need for proper conservative measures to protect the ecosystems.
