Abstract

The macroinvertebrates in a high shore mangrove forest and adjoining deforested area were compared in Sementa Selangor. The most abundant macroinvertebrate in both the sites was the capitellid polychaete Leiochrides australis. Among others Uca rosea was four times more abundant in the cleared area than in the forest while the sipuncula Phascolosoma arcuatum was thre times more abundant in the forest than in the cleared area. The mean total dry biomass of the macroinvertebrates was 27.43 gm-2 in the cleared area and 22.03 gm-2 in the forest. Deforestation for logging appears to alter the structure of the faunal community.
