Abstract
Forty-mine families comprising 117 species were recorded from a total of 40 484 fishes that were sampled in mangrove channels mudflats and inshore waters of Matang. The abundant fish in the Matang waters were the ambassids 18.0 followed by the sciaenids 17.5. The mean fish biomass of mangrove channels 40.0 kg ha-1 was higher than that of the adjacent mudflats 30.5 kg ha-1. The mean fish densities mangrove channels and the adjacent mudflats were 8 517 individuals ha-1 and 6 699 individuals ha-1 respectively. Maturity indices indicate that the juveniles comprised 85 of the 28 588 specimens of the 14 common species sampled in the mangrove channels and adjacent mudflats. Fish diversity was high in the magrove channels and adjacent mudflats. The Sciaenidae Engraulidae Scatophagidae and Ariidae utilise the mangrove channels and adjacent ludflats as nursery or breeding grounds or both while other fishes utilise the two habitats as nursery grounds.
