Abstract

The general process of composting for the treatment of sewage sludge and other suitable organic wastes is discussed. Parameters needed to control a sustainable composting system include aeration optimum moisture content and temperature set-point. The different composting systems is also detailed with special reference to the forced aerated pile method with temperature feedback control Rutgers aeration system. Operation of the composting process utilizing this method has been shown to maximize decomposition. Various reports utilizing such system in composting of cattle sluries. Liquid organic wastes with high BOD are a potential pollution hazard. However such wastes with moisture content in excess of 90 can only be conveniently composted by incorporation of bulking agents. Aspects and advantages of compost utilization has also been detailed.
