Abstract

Trihalomethanes THMs are side products from the chlorination process during water treatment. Studies have shown that certain species of THMs can cause cancer. A preliminary study in 12 areas in the Klang Valley detected 3 main species of THMs with chloroform being the most common. Most areas sampled complied with the WHO recommended limit of 30 ug/L except for one area which persistently exceeded the limit recording up to 400 ug/L THMs. Further studies will be carried out to reduce THMs from the latter plant using the conventional method to reduce THM precursors.
