Abstract
A study on macrobenthic faunal composition and abundance were conducted around the waters of Pulau Redang from September 1990 to October 1991 during which a bimonthly sampling programme was initiated. Samples were taken along two series of transects on the opposite sides of the island. Transect Series 1 faces the mainland with depth range of between 29-35m while transect Series 2 faces the open sea with depth range of 21-44m. A total of 47 893 individuals of macrobenthic organisms were counted with 29 992 individuals recorded from Series 1 and 10 901 individuals from Series 2. All stations in Series 1 have higher abundance than station in Series 2. Both Series showed a decrease in abundance from March to May followed by progressive increase from May to December. Polychaetes were the most dominant group encountered which contribute 50.7. The dominant families encountered in Series 1 were Spionidae Sabellidae and Capitellidae while those of Series 2 were Spionidae Syllidae and Paraonidae. The second dominant group was crustaceans 39 and more than half of them were contributed by gammaridean amphipods. This was followed by echinoderms 2.7 molluscs 1.6 and others 6.
