Abstract

Field surveys of coral reefs provide important information on the status coral reef communities species present and abundance of individual species. Mapping of coral reefs however require more intensive surveying or aerial photography which is often more expensive rigorous and time consuming. Remote sensing methods have been employed in isolated locations for shallow water mapping of coral reefs and bathymetry. This paper describe an attempt to map and determine physiographic zonation of Pulau Layang Layang reef in Malaysia. Due of the physical limitation of the data structure depth of penetration of the visible portion of the electromagnetics spectrum and physical size of the reef feature zonal identification is only successful in the inner reef and lagoon areas. This method is useful as s first description of physiographic zonation prior to field surveys.
