Abstract
Pig farming is one of the largest industries in Penang Island and also considered to be one of the biggest pollutant sources. There exist about 600 pig farms and the total breeding number are around 100 000 heads. During the site observation it was found that most pig farms were located along the rivers. In this study it was also observed that all the waste generated in the farms were washed out and discharged into the rivers without any reduction or treatment. Severe deterioration of the river water conditions were noted and apparently caused by discharges from the pig farms. As a result possible centralization and reduction of pig farm waste is proposed.
