Abstract
The evaluation of the antioxidant pontential of boiling water methanol and ethanol extracts from Barringtonia recemosa L. leaf stick and bark extracts were screened for their 2 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl DPPH radical scavenging capacity reducing power and B-carotene linoleate model system. Total phenolic flavonoid and carotenoid contents of all extracts were also determined. Methanol extracts of all aerial parts contained relatively higher level of total phenolics than other extracts leaf: 16.2 0.02 mg gallic acid/g freeze dried-weight tissue FDW stick: 29.9 0.02 mg gallic acid/g FDW bark: 21.78 0.20 mg gallic acid/g FDW and ethanol extracts in all aerial parts gave higher level of total flavonoids leaf: 60.57 4.31 mg quercetin/g FDW stick: 59.04 4.99 mg quercetin/g FDW bark: 96.61 1.73 mg quercetin/g FDW. The amount of B-carotene was found higher in methanol and ethanol extracts of leaf part 342.2 8.79 ug /B-carotene/g FDW; 356.9 0.93 ug B-carotene/g FDW respectively. The methanol and ethanol extracts in all aerial parts exhibited very strong antioxidant properties when compared to standard antioxidants such as butylated hydroxy toluene BHT ascorbic acid Vitamin C and a-tocopherol in the DPPH radical scavenging reducing power and B-carotene linoleate assays. These results demonstrate that alcoholic extracts of leaf stick mid bark of B. racemosa may have the potential to be used as antioxidant agents compared to the boiling water extracts which showed the lowest antioxidant activity.
