Abstract

Fish from the family Chaetodontidae are most completely associated with coral reef ecosystem and has been suggested as a bioindicator for the health of reef due to their close association with the reef itself. At Pulau Payar Marine Park 17 species of Chaetodontidae and a hybrid between Chaetodon kleinii and Chaetodan refflesi have been observed. The number of species from this marine park was the highest when compared to other marine parks in Peninsular Malaysia even though the coral cover was less healthy and less diversified than the others. Pulau Redang the Johor Islands Pulau Tioman and Pulau Kapas had less species compared to Pulau Payar with 17 13 8 and 9 respectively. Even though the species number was less compared to the Pulau Sipadan and Pulau Layang Layang at 36 and 32 species respectively Pulau Payar was considered to be unique because of its location in the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia and the health status of coral cover which was very much degraded. More studies on the ecology of this family and other fishes need to be conducted to better understand and provide more in depth knowledge of the ecosystem.
