Sustainable food crop production in Malaysia

Abstract

In line with the National Agricultural Policy 3 NAP3 where sustainable agriculture is the main thrust the Ministry and Agrobase Industry is geared towards increasing food crop production in oder to address the countrys RM9.7 billion deficit in food bill import 2007. This includes the increase in productivity of food crop especially rice vegetables and fruits. With the current issues and challenges such as the establishments of World Trade Organization WTO and Asean Free Trade Area AFTA and to make Malaysia as net exporter of food by 2010 agricultural product of Malaysia must be competitive in the international market. Agricultural product must be of quality safe to eat and must be meet the international standards such as sanitary and Post Sanitary SPS and GlobalGap. With the above issues and challenges and growing world concern on friendly environment this paper gives an account on programmes under the scope of soil science towards achieving sustainable food crop production.
