Abstract

Rhizophora stylosa belonging to the family Rhizophoraceae was found growing very near to the sea shore of Bagan Lalang within the mangrove strip. Its potential uses were based on its physical properties in the present study such as density moisture content and shrinkage and its current status of usage as bakau. The air dry density of R. stylosa ranges from 848-1054 kgm-J and its moisture content 40-54. The green to air-dry shrinkage on tangential face is rated as very high 4.3 radial shrinkage as average 2 and longitudinal shrinkage as low 0.7. It is available in pole sizes and may be suitable for striking tools temporary structures scaffolding and piling where structural application is required. Otherwise the timber is useful for making charcoal firewood pulp and paper and rayon. It is also attractive enough for parquet flooring when sawn.
