Abstract
In order to achieve high rice yield production in Malaysia many improvements have been done by field managers and farmers in term of rice crop establishment and nutrient management. The higher production levels were achieved through intensive use of chemical fertilizers pesticides and the use of mechanization in the fields. However these intensive activities in long term could be a major cause of changes in the status of soil health and quality. Thus a study was carried out in order to assess the soil health status under intensively cultivated rice production area in MADA. Four major parameters were identified and used in this assessment study and the results clearly indicated some degradation in soil health status in the experimental location. Further studies are needed to integrate the soil health and other environmental sustainability indicators in order to develop tools for identification the status of environmental sustainability in rice production system in Malaysia.
